How to Make Coconut Oil at Home 🥥

Coconut oil is a versatile product that can be used for cooking, skincare, and hair care. Making your coconut oil at home is a rewarding process, allowing you to enjoy pure and natural oil free from additives. Follow these simple steps to create your coconut oil.

Table of Contents

Ingredients:

  • Mature coconuts (quantity depends on your preference)
  • Warm water

Directions:

Step 1: Break the Coconuts

  • Crack open the coconuts and pry out the coconut meat using a knife. Once the coconut is mature, the meat should come out easily.

Step 2: Prepare the Coconut Meat

  • Rinse the pieces of coconut thoroughly and cut them into small pieces to help your blender.
  • Boil some water and mix it with cool water to create warm water for blending.

Step 3: Blend the Coconut Meat

  • Blend the coconut pieces with the warm water until smooth. Depending on the quantity, you may need to blend in batches.

Step 4: Extract the Coconut Milk

  • Pour the blended mixture through a sieve to separate the coconut milk from the chaff.
  • Press the mixture with your hands to squeeze out the last drop of coconut milk.
  • Grind the chaff a second time with more warm water to extract additional coconut milk.

Step 5: Filter the Coconut Milk

  • Use a sieve with a finer mesh to remove the tiniest particles from the coconut milk.
  • Cover the bowl of coconut milk and place it in the refrigerator overnight.

Step 6: Separate the Coconut Oil

  • The next morning, the coconut oil will have separated from the water and formed a solid layer on top.
  • Scoop the solidified coconut oil and place it in a clean, dry stainless steel pot.
  • The remaining water in the bowl can be used for cooking, such as boiling rice or preparing coconut-based dishes.

Step 7: Cook the Coconut Oil

  • Cover the pot and cook the coconut oil on low to medium heat. If you notice any smoke, reduce the heat to very low.
  • Stir occasionally and cook until you see charred coconut bits in the oil, which should take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Set the pot aside to allow the coconut oil to cool to a comfortable temperature.

Step 8: Strain the Coconut Oil

  • Sieve the cooled coconut oil using a chiffon cloth or a cheesecloth to remove the charred bits.
  • If you still notice any charred bits, sieve again with a paper towel.

Step 9: Store the Coconut Oil

  • Store the filtered coconut oil in a jar or bottle and keep it in your cupboard for future use.

That’s it! Your homemade coconut oil is ready to use. Enjoy it for cooking and as a natural treatment for your hair and body.
